WelcomeWelcome to my website. I've learned that a webpage is pretty much always a work-in-progress. I've upgraded, changed pictures, revised and revised again. And I've found it to be a fascinating process. So I hope you’ll maneuver around this space and explore the different worlds I’ve found so fascinating. One of the joys of writing is exactly that – you get to walk into worlds and meet people you’d otherwise never know much about. And so I’ve written about the determined kids who were part of the civil rights movement; veterinarians and all the different animals they help; the brave young Japanese Americans who were locked up behind barbed wire here in the U.S. during World War II; the Danes who saved 95% of the Danish Jews when Hitler and the Nazis were murdering millions of Jews throughout Europe; a boy named Jedediah Barstow who traveled to Oregon in a covered wagon; and a teen girl named Jamie Morse who got kicked off her school newspaper because her parents were involved in leftist politics when Senator McCarthy (in the 1950s) was on a hunt for “Reds.” I’ve also written about the Great San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the Underground Railroad with its tales of courage and daring astonishing to us even a century and a half later, and about the remarkable life of Rachel Carson who most everyone recognizes as the mother of the environmental movement. I’ve told these stories in novels and nonfiction, picture books and books for YA readers, twenty books in all. I hope you let me know what you think of all these stories. Cheers, and happy reading! |
